Columbus Technology Council and Columbus Airport Authority Lauch

Columbus, Ohio – Tomorrow, the Columbus Technology Council and the Columbus Airport Authority will launch a multimedia exhibit, named the Technology Gateway, at Port Columbus International Airport to promote Central Ohio’s technological strengths.

Media are invited to attend the unveiling. Details on the event are as follows:

Date: Friday, Oct. 18th, 2002, 10 a.m. Location: Near Max & Erma’s Restaurant at the escalators leading to baggage claim Speakers: Mayor Michael B. Coleman; Elaine Roberts, Executive Director of the Columbus Airport Authority; Carl Kohrt, CEO of Battelle; and Robert Massie, Director and CEO of Chemical Abstract Services

The Technology Gateway is positioned in one of the airport’s most visible locations, above the Concourse B escalators leading to baggage claim, where it will be visible to millions of visitors each year. The exhibit consists of an array of large plasma displays, a high resolution LED, and other hardware and software that orchestrate an ever-changing mix of messages and images across the screens.

Initially, the Technology Gateway addresses two primary themes. The first theme is the surprising magnitude of technological activity in the region. This theme includes messages pertaining to the region’s existing base of research activities, technological professionals and innovation-driven businesses. The second theme focuses on Columbus as an attractive region for technology professionals, with key benefits including shorter commute times, lower housing costs and a more vibrant region as compared to other technology centers.

Several entities contributed to the effort. The Columbus Technology Council contributed funding and assumed responsibility for maintaining and updating the exhibit over time. Port Columbus donated the space for a term of five years. Battelle and the Ohio Department of Development provided generous financial contributions. WBNS-Channel 10 and HER Realtors provided free access to their archives of video and still images for the project.

“Port Columbus is a great location for showcasing the region’s technology strengths and quality of life. The Columbus Technology Council is deeply grateful to Port Columbus, Battelle, the State of Ohio, WBNS Channel 10 and HER Realtors for their contributions and collaboration on this project,” said Robert Massie, Chairman of the Columbus Technology Council.

The Columbus Airport Authority shares in the enthusiasm for this display and what it can do for Central Ohio.

“Port Columbus is delighted by the opportunity to work with the Columbus Technology Council on the Technology Gateway,” said Elaine Roberts, Executive Director, Columbus Airport Authority. ”Our contribution to the effort reflects our desire to actively participate in the economic growth of the region. Technology is shaping the future of the global economy and we hope to encourage its growth right here in Central Ohio.”
